Our New Cow!

Meet Midnight!

I am so excited to introduce our first bred back heifer! We finally bought our first bred back heifer to start our own herd! Our plan was to buy two, but the auction is a tough place to buy. Small steps is what we have to take to reach our goals. We believe in starting with the best quality, even if that means starting with small numbers. This heifer comes from 50+ years of breeding experience. She is a SimAngus crossbreed (stay tuned for breed information to come).

How she is settling in……Meet Midnight

We named her Midnight because, well she is all black, and because my husband joked when we brought her home at night, we should rename our farm to Midnight Cattle Company because we always seem to bring cows home at night…something that is not fun!

…A little unsure

Midnight comes from a large ranch of hundreds of cows and close human contact she is unsure of, so she hides behind her new friends.

Nutrition

Midnight gets to eat with the steers that are being fed out. She requires high protein and good quality feed for her body’s health while being pregnant.

A New Routine

Midnight is learning her new routine well. Cows are the best herd animals I have ever experienced. They accept new members into their herd with no problems.

The Herd

I have one horse who absolutely loves cows. When he can he loves on them over the fence.

Midnight comes to us 7-8 months pregnant. A cows’ gestation period is 10 months. So, we should have a baby January or February! Watch for the next email to come debuting the new little calf!
