Has the light bulb ever gone off that livestock farmers are really professional grass farmers?! So let’s talk about soil…healthy soil grows healthy grass grows healthy cows creating clean delicious beef!
All life begins in soil, it isn’t just dirt. It is an active breathing organism, the largest organism on the planet earth. Food has to grow in soil with the right building blocks to create nutrient density, We need to bring the minerals back into our food supply.
You’ve heard of seed to table, it should be soil to table.
One of the biggest challenges in America is people don’t know who grows their food. One problem is the distance of the food from the source to the table. The secret is we need to get back as close to the soil as we can.
The truth is, we are not what we eat, we are what we eat eats.
Industrial farming, or monocropping, is detrimental for our soils, and is destroying the soil’s microbiome. The soil microbiome is a diverse community of microorganisms in soil that drives nutrient cycling, supports plant growth, and maintains ecosystem health. The soil microbiome consists of bacteria, fungi, archaea, viruses, and protozoa that inhabit the upper layers of soil.
4 Key Practices for Soil Health
- MINIMIZE SOIL DISTURBANCE – No tilling to protect soil structure and the microbiome, tilling kills the bacteria and fungi
- PLANT SOIL ARMOUR – to strengthen the microbiome for the next season’s crop; and to protect the soil from degrading the soil
- CROP ROTATION – or intercropping; so each crop pulls or mines different nutrients and minerals from the soil, so as not to deplete them; and reduces pests
- THOUGHTFUL ANIMAL INTEGRATION – Using manure as a fertilization tool, cattle stomp in their waste product and in-turn fertilizes the land for us in a way humans cannot.
- Chickens also help spread that fertilizer, the manure, buy scratching through it and in their scratching technique they are further fertilizing the soil.
- Bifurcated hooved animals like cows, and chickens are a perfect example of God’s creation and design to complete the whole symbiosis of nature
